There are many benefits to learning a musical instrument, whatever age. The disciplines involved improve your memory, alertness, organisation, self-discipline, attentiveness, co-ordination, concentration and self confidence as well as stimulating creativity. Research has found that the corpus callosum (the part of the brain which links the left and right halves) increases in size in musicians. For children, it helps the development of the brain and adds to general education, enhancing reading skills, incorporating maths, languages and history and actually raising the IQ. As an adult, either continuing an instrument learned at a younger age, or starting from the beginning, it helps to avoid dementia later in life, while improving memory, manual dexterity and hearing and also reducing stress levels. As well as playing individually in lessons and at home, playing music in a group helps team skills and is a wonderfully sociable way to spend spare time.
